One of the biggest advantages of the InQuik methodology is the fact that the bridge parts are fully cast on-site, which makes it much easier to transport and place in position. However, this also enables the possibility of constructing a fully integral bridge, which is generally not possible with precast.
In an integral concrete bridge structure, the deck is directly linked to the abutments through a reinforced concrete connection. This creates an exceptionally strong structure which is able to withstand significant forces from floodwaters, earthquakes and other natural events. Integral bridges also do not require bearings and tie-downs between the deck and abutments, removing this upfront cost (~$8-10,000) and eliminating the need for on-going inspection and maintenance of these parts.
In order to achieve an integral InQuik bridge structure, the formwork is removed from the ends of the deck panels, and from the front face of the top section of the abutments. A series of specially engineered tie-bars are placed between the deck and abutment to connect them, and concrete is poured across both the deck and abutment sections at the same time.
So far, InQuik has successfully installed integral bridges with 6, 9, 12, 13.7 and 16m spans, and 18.5m designs are also available. We are also currently manufacturing parts for a 2-span bridge project (total length 24m) which uses integral abutments and is simply-supported over the InQuik headstock (using bearings).
InQuik's efficient “place and pour” methodology means an integral Bridge can be installed by semi-skilled labour in about 2-3 days on-site over a total project timeline of 2 to 3 weeks. The ease and speed of installation, coupled with the long-lasting, robust concrete structure, make this product a perfect solution for bridge asset renewals.
